Peel Season

It’s September, which in the skincare world marks the start of peel season. Fall and winter are the ideal times for chemical peels because we naturally have less sun exposure. While the words “chemical peel” may sound intimidating, I promise it’s not scary. In fact, chemical peels are one of my favorite treatments because they can deliver transformative results for a variety of skin concerns. At SKINHAMPTON in Southampton, NY, I use professional peel blends that are effective, gentle, and completely customizable to your goals.

A chemical peel is a professional treatment that uses exfoliating acids to dissolve away dead skin cells and stimulate fresh, healthy skin. These peels can be made up of different acids to target specific concerns. Lactic acid is hydrating, TCA helps fade pigmentation, and mandelic acid is excellent for congestion and acne. By gently breaking down the bonds that hold dead cells together, a peel reveals smoother, brighter skin while encouraging healthy cell turnover.

If you’re picturing red, flaky skin for weeks, you can let that fear go. Modern peels, like the ones I use at SKINHAMPTON, are designed to have little to no downtime. You might notice a bit of light flaking around the nose and mouth, but you may not peel at all. Either way, the treatment is still working. Most clients describe the sensation during treatment as a mild “stingle” that lasts only a few minutes. I’ll be right there fanning your skin to keep it comfortable.

Fall is the perfect season to get started with peels because it’s easier to stay out of the sun. While I do peels year-round myself, many people prefer the cooler months since sun sensitivity is increased after treatment. Immediately after your peel, your skin may look flushed and feel extra glowy and tight. A few days later, you may see light flaking, but it’s very important not to pick or pull at the skin. Instead, focus on extra hydration and daily sunscreen. I’ll review your aftercare with you at your appointment and make sure your skincare routine is adjusted if needed.

With consistent treatments, chemical peels can dramatically improve skin over time. They are one of the best options for treating acne, congestion, pigmentation, dehydration, and overall dullness. They also make your other skincare products work better by helping them absorb more effectively. Depending on your goals, we may do peels every four weeks, or every two weeks if you are on a dedicated acne program. Each time, we can slowly increase the strength of the peel or alternate formulas to target different concerns. My approach is always “low and slow,” building tolerance gradually while protecting your skin barrier.

Almost everyone can be a good candidate for chemical peels, especially if you’re looking to address breakouts, uneven tone, rough texture, or dull skin. If your skin is very sensitive or freshly exfoliated, we may wait, and if you are pregnant or nursing, I offer pregnancy-safe options. If you’re hesitant, we can always start with an enzyme treatment, which is a gentler introduction to exfoliation. During our consultation, we’ll talk through the best option for your skin that day.

At SKINHAMPTON, I offer three main methods of exfoliation: chemical, physical, and enzymatic. Chemical exfoliation is done through peels, which are the most customizable and corrective. Physical exfoliation is done through dermaplaning, which instantly smooths skin and removes peach fuzz. Enzymatic exfoliation is done with enzyme masks that gently digest dead skin cells. Sometimes I combine these approaches, called “stacking,” to enhance results. For example, adding a light enzyme after dermaplaning. But if you’re new to exfoliation, we’ll keep it simple to learn how your skin responds before layering treatments.

There are a few ways to try a chemical peel at SKINHAMPTON in Southampton. If you are an acne client and have already had your Acne Consultation, you can book an Acne Treatment, which typically includes a peel unless your skin needs something gentler that day. The Essential Facial allows you to add on a Light Chemical Peel for more targeted results. The Everything Facial Experience includes dermaplaning, but if you would prefer a peel instead, that’s an easy switch (just note it when you make your appointment).

Not sure if a peel is right for you? That’s what I’m here for. We’ll talk through your skin goals and create the best plan together. Now that peel season is here, it’s the perfect time to book your appointment and start your fall skincare journey in the Hamptons.
