What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliating treatment that removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (what many of us call “peach fuzz”) using a sterilized scalpel designed specifically for this purpose. The process leaves your skin smoother, softer, and perfectly prepped to absorb your skincare products. Unlike other forms of exfoliation, dermaplaning also removes hair to give you that instantly smooth, glowing finish that makeup glides onto flawlessly.

Why Exfoliation Matters

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. Regular exfoliation helps prevent dullness, supports cell turnover, smooths texture, and allows serums and moisturizers to penetrate more effectively.

There are two main types of exfoliation:

  • Physical exfoliation, which includes scrubs, microdermabrasion, and dermaplaning, involves manually sloughing away dead skin cells.

  • Chemical exfoliation, which uses acids (like those in chemical peels) or enzymes to break down dead skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) dissolve the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface. Enzyme masks, on the other hand, digest those dead skin cells and stimulate circulation.

Scrubs can sometimes be harsh and inconsistent, microdermabrasion doesn’t remove peach fuzz, and chemical peels are not suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive skin. Dermaplaning offers a gentle, precise physical exfoliation treatment that’s safe for sensitive skin and provides the added benefit of removing peach fuzz—the key to that enviable dermaplane glow.

Magdalena is trained and certified by Dermaplane Pro to provide the highest quality dermaplaning services that are both safe and effective.

Professional Dermaplaning vs. At-Home Tools

At-home dermaplaning tools have become popular, but they are not the same as a professional treatment. Many at-home devices have safety guards that, paradoxically, can make them rougher on your skin, and they are not sterilized between uses. Professional dermaplaning allows me to stretch the skin and see every angle, ensuring safe and thorough exfoliation. While at-home tools are great for shaping eyebrows or trimming peach fuzz, they can’t replicate the precision, safety, and effectiveness of a professional exfoliation session.

What to Expect During a Treatment

A dermaplaning session is both relaxing and results-driven.

  • First, your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove makeup and impurities.

  • I use an exfoliating toner to prep your skin. This can have a quick little “stingle,” but most clients barely notice it.

  • I apply a specialized oil that gives me the right amount of slip to minimize the risk of nicking your skin.

  • At this point, I offer you eye covers because I turn up the lights so I can see every detail while I am working.

  • Using a single-use Dermaplane Pro blade, I gently and carefully remove layers of dead skin and fine hair, working methodically across your face.

    • You will feel me stretch your skin and glide in very controlled and repeated strokes.

    • I will gently move your head from side to side so I can get every angle.

    • The process is precise, controlled, and painless. Most clients find it surprisingly soothing, and some enter a nap-like or meditative state.

    • We typically don’t talk much during the actual dermaplaning part. This allows me to focus fully, and it also minimizes your facial movements for safety.

  • Depending on your appointment and skin, we may follow with an enzyme mask to further exfoliate, or a hydrating mask to nourish and soothe.

  • Afterward, I will nourish your skin with calming serums and moisturizers, and SPF will be applied to protect your freshly exfoliated skin if it is daytime.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Dermaplaning is ideal for anyone looking to smooth texture, remove fine hair, or enhance the absorption of skincare products. It’s especially great for people with sensitive skin who may not be able to tolerate chemical peels. However, clients with active acne lesions, very inflamed or reactive skin, or certain skin conditions may need to wait until their skin calms before booking a session. If you have an active cold sore, we’ll wait until it has fully healed before scheduling dermaplaning. We will wait until you have healed from any other skin treatments and procedures before your dermaplaning appointment.

Myths and Misconceptions

There are a few myths about dermaplaning worth clearing up:

  • Does hair grow back thicker? No. Vellus hair remains the same thickness, so your peach fuzz won’t come back darker or coarser. I like to joke that if dermaplaning could make hair grow back thicker, I’d have a second business helping people with hair loss!

  • Can it damage skin? Not when performed by a trained professional using proper technique and sterilized tools. There is always a risk of nicking the skin. I do everything in my power to minimize the chance of a nick.

Frequency and Aftercare

For most clients, dermaplaning is recommended every 4–6 weeks, depending on skin type and goals. You can do it less often if you just like to get a dermaplane facial before a special event, or once a month if you want to be consistent. Aftercare is simple: keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturizer, protect it with SPF, and avoid exfoliating products for a few days. For the first 24 hours, skip saunas, hot baths, or sweaty workouts. Change your pillowcase, wash your makeup brushes, and keep your skin clean. Don’t worry, we’ll review all aftercare instructions together before you leave.
